I qualified as a carpenter & joiner after completing
a three year apprenticeship in 1987 in my native Germany. This apprenticeship involved cabinet building as well as site joinery.
Having moved to Crete in 1990 I built up my first joinery
shop, where I specialised in the production of custom made furniture, windows, shutters and doors. In Greece, roofing is also
the responsibility of carpenters and joiners, including the roof tiling.
In 1997, after a short stint working and gaining experience
in timber-frame house construction in Colorado - USA, I moved to the UK and worked on various sites in W-Yorkshire
and Devon as a sub-contractor.
From 2000 until 2007 I studied for a teaching degree
and taught secondary "Design & Technology". In that time I learned my skills in computer aided design.
Peverell Carpentry & Joinery Services was established
only recently, in January 2008. It is my aim to build up a trusting relationship with my customers, who are predominately
from the domestic market. I believe that there are not enough trustworthy tradesmen left who look after customers from normal
households, as most businesses are looking into the bigger housing market or commercial building. The local joiner or
carpenter, "no job too small" is dying out and soon it will be impossible to find someone who comes around
to plane of your doors after the carpet fitter has been, or fit a cupboard into the alcove without having gaps on both sides.
The environment is another issue I am concerned about. I
am trying to use natural materials/woods as much as possible, avoiding MDF and chipboard as much as possible.
